Motherhood is:
Walking into the bathroom to find a toddler elbow deep in toilet water.
And then realizing that it’s un-flushed toilet water that has sparked his glee.
It’s throwing out the toothbrush and the hairbrush that have been emphatically dipped in urine.
And it’s realizing that the pools of urine on the floor don’t actually make the “kids” bathroom much filthier than it was before.
It’s using this less than stellar parenting situation as a motivation to finally mop the bathroom floor.
And to wash the towels that had a few more uses left in them before being used to clean up pee.
It’s dipping a toddler in the tub because he smells like the toilet.
And it’s watching him splash with excitement in a more appropriate setting.
It’s allowing a weary heart to be filled by the sound of a little one’s laughter.
And it’s exchanging the stink for the scent of something sweeter, a scent that fills my nostrils as a damp head nestles against my shoulder.
That’s motherhood. Today anyway. Yesterday it looked a little different. And tomorrow it will too.
But some aspects of motherhood will always remain the same. Love. Laughter. And the light in a child’s eyes that brings beauty into even the most unpleasant situations.
