God looked down on his creation and said, “I need something that will ease the pain of this world, something that will be a force of joy in the howling winds of despair. I need something that will mend the hearts cracked by grief and loneliness, disappointment and failure.”
So God gave us laughter.
He said, “I need something that will restore a person’s broken spirit, something that will free hearts from the chains of hopelessness and give life to those buried under the weight of heartbreak, depression, and suffocating responsibility. I need a pleasant sound that will echo through the deepest valleys, a sound that will break down the walls surrounding hurting hearts.”
So God gave us laughter.
He said, “I need something to bridge the gap between children and adults, between young and old, between all the people of the earth; something that will unite instead of divide. I need something that will weave the hearts of people together, something that is more powerful than words.”
So God gave us laughter.
He said, “I need something that will bring light to life’s darkest seasons, something that will ignite a spark within a person’s soul. I need something that will rescue a person from the rubble of life’s inevitable storms, something that will soothe their wounds.”
So God gave us laughter.
He said, “I need something that will be a healing balm when the fires of life scorch, a flash of hope in the barren lands of guilt and sorrow, regret and shame. I need something that will be available to all people, something to bring relief on a daily basis.”
So God gave us laughter.
He said, “I need something that will resound in a person’s heart, something that will drown out hate and negativity, despair and gloom. I need something that will resonate with all people, something that will mitigate their agony even in the most distressing circumstances.”
So God gave us laughter.
He knew that this life would be overwhelming, that daily trials would cause our faces to fall, that hardships would bring us to our knees. He knew that tragedy would occur, that our joy would waver and our hearts would wither. He knew that it would be all too easy for us to be consumed by bitterness and that we would need a daily remedy for the crushing pain of a broken world.
So God gave us laughter.
